Life is Short?

You know, some people say life is short and that you could get hit by a bus at any moment and that you have to live each day like it’s your last. Bullshit. Life is long. You’re probably not gonna get hit by a bus. And you’re gonna have to live with the choices you make for the next fifty years.
— Chris Rock

This quote comes out of the movie I Think I Love My Wife. When I heard it, it forced me to think about how I would define life. Is life short? Is it long?

The answer could depend on your perspective. If you feel life is coming to an end and you’re looking backwards, you might feel life is short. If you’re young and you keep hearing “you have your whole life ahead of you” then you might view life as being long. Would we want to find the exact answer? Would we want to know exactly how short or long life was? If I knew the exact amount of time I had on this earth, it would be like something hovering over me, and I wouldn’t want that. As far as that subject is concerned, I’ll stay blissfully ignorant.

Though we never truely know how long we have, we have some control right? We can drive safely or look both ways before we cross the street or live a healthy lifestyle or not kill ourselves.

Life is painful one minute then full of happiness and joy the next.

Life is infinite, yet it’s finite. The amount of people you can affect in your lifetime is limitless (infinite). However, when a person dies, we say that person lived X amount of years (finite).

Life is this. Life is that. If there was a calculator that let me type in “Life =” the answer would be “undefined”. There are so many possibilities that it’s impossible to use a single adjective to completely describe something so vast. We can put anything in there and it will be true. Try it. Life is ________. That means we decide what life is, and life can be anything we want it to be. We fill in the blank.

    Hi Broderick,

Life is…amazing! That’s how I’d fill in the blank. We have so much possibility in our lives, so much potential. And if we really approach life as that – life is amazing.

I love your calculator example, because I say this today – amazing – and yet tomorrow I might define it differently. It is undefined – or at least has infinite definitions. For today, though, for me: Life=amazing.

Life is definitely changing constantly. And what is wonderful, is that every new moment brings the possibility of new and better decisions. Although we can’t control most of life, we can choose to change our life direction and remain optimistic. Thanks.

@ Lance – I think that’s a great way to fill in the blank, and you’re right. The potential in us is simply incredible.
@ Dianne – Thank you for the feedback! We absolutely have the ability to make better decisions and control where our lives are headed. We do have to get through the blocks that would stop us from taking advantage of the opportunity to do so though.

Life is great and you never know when your time is going to come. This is something I’ve really come to realize over the past few years. I’ve seen family members pass, and while it is sad to see them go, they have taught me to better appreciate what I have.

    Great post!

@ Happiness – So true. I had a family member pass not too long ago and that’s exactly what it taught me. Thank you for the comment!
@ Henie – Thank you for the feedback and great point! The present moment is all there is and we should appreciate it.

Everyone says “Live each day as if it’s your last.” It’s kind of a depressing thought. It should instead be “Live each day as if it’s your First.”

Greet each morning with fresh eyes, a new perspective. Who will we meet today? What new concept will we learn? It’s more fun to have boundless curiosity of what the day will bring.

Life can be satisfyingly long if we savor every good moment daily.

    Hey Marissa,
Wow, what an insightful comment. I never thought to see life like that, but that view could be very empowering. Thank you for visiting!

    Hi,
I like what Marissa says. Live as if each day is your first!

I just found this index card I kept in my car under my seat. I put it in my shopping bag to bring back in the house because I want it on my kitchen table where I eat each morning.

It says, “in our amazing universe, anything can happen, anyplace, anytime. Because of the quantum connections we share, our actions, our intentions can bring immediate results from surprising people and unexpected locales.” I think it’s out of one of Sandra Taylor’s books.

Life is exciting, what a great time to be here.

What if, all of a sudden, you decided that this physical life was the perfect length? This would mean you are realizing measurable quantity is becoming less important. This would mean you have reached a new stage in self-awareness. This would mean you acknowledge you continue to grow in ways that will astound your conscious self in ways you have not imagined.

@Tess – I like what Marissa says too and wonderful quote. It’s easy to see the effect connections can bring, and the more connections there are, the more results. Thank you for that. I’ll have to check out Sandra Taylor.

@Liara – I never thought of it like that. I’ll have to let that sink in for a while. Thank you for this insightful comment. I’m so thankful for the different perspectives that come here. This is great.
